Washington shakes hands and smiles at Russian drills while allies wonder whose side we’re really on.

The Pentagon has confirmed what sounds like the opening line of a bad political satire: U.S. military officials were spotted in Belarus, politely observing joint Russian–Belarusian war games.
Yes, while Russia continues to hammer Ukraine with missiles and drones, Washington thought it wise to send uniformed emissaries to clap politely at “Zapad-2025.”

According to Reuters, the Americans were photographed in the stands alongside observers from other nations, watching drills hosted by none other than Belarus — Moscow’s most loyal lapdog and the very launchpad for Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov even made an appearance. In case anyone forgot who the bad guys are, Moscow thoughtfully provided a reminder.

Why were U.S. officers there? Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell explained with a straight face: “The U.S. Embassy in Minsk received an invitation for our Defense Attache to attend the ZAPAD-2025 exercise as part of Distinguished Visitor Day, and we accepted.” Distinguished Visitor Day — DV Day for short — is usually the military equivalent of “bring a foreign dignitary to work.”
