It started, as these things often do, with a voice on the radio telling America the sky was falling: Orson Welles, October 30th, 1938 — a little Halloween prank that sent the public into hysterics.
Housewives fainted, preachers screamed, and men in flannel shirts loaded shotguns in defense of their front lawns. No Martians ever landed in Grover’s Mill, of course, but it didn’t matter. The radio said it was true.
The Voice came through the static, confident and calm, and America — sweet, gullible, wide-eyed America…
