Let them eat… appropriations. Forty-two million Americans—roughly the population of California plus a long line at the DMV—are told, with the serene cruelty of a marble plaque, that on November 1 there will be no SNAP benefits.
The government is “shut down,” which in Washington dialect means: the lights are on, but empathy has been furloughed.
“Regrettably,” says the notice, “the well has run dry.”
